Broccolini is available year round. In addition to having a wonderful taste Broccolini is filled with vitamins and minerals. It contains high amounts of Vitamin C, Iron, Potassium, Fiber and Vitamin A.
Description – This hybrid, a cross between broccoli and Chinese cabbage, is milder and sweeter than traditional broccoli but with a subtle, peppery edge. Its long, slender stem is topped with small flowering buds that look like a combination of broccoli florets and asparagus tips. It’s edible from flower to stem and is less fibrous than broccoli or asparagus.
Buying Tip – Choose firm, brilliant-green broccolini with no yellow.
Storing Tip – Refrigerate in a plastic bag up to 5 days.
Preparing Tip – Wash just before using, trim ¼ inch off stem ends.
Bright ideas – Steam in a little chicken broth and minced garlic, then toss with cooked pasta OR stir-fry with other vegetables for a quick side dish OR saute’ with olive oil, chopped onion and capers for a meat accompaniment.
