Juicy Gello Flu Shots

For our readers who are not in favor of flu shots via a needle, this is an alternative flu shot using juices, teas and herbs. Be creative and play around with your favorite fruit and herbs. Recipe and variations below.

Most Common Immune Boosters

CALENDULA – Is a popular herb for stimulating the immune system and for preventing infection.  A gentle remedy when taken internally (tea) for mild digestive ailments.  A tea made of Calendula will help to increase perspiration to reduce fever and is said to be good for bringing out the spots in cases of measles.

GINGER – Helps to boost the immune system and prevents colds and flu from taking hold. Great for stomach ailments too!

ECHINACEA – Combats infectious diseases from recurring due to decreased body defenses.  It is an inflammatory, and an anti-cancer.  Echinacea increased the defense mechanisms of the immune system by stimulating humora and cellular immunity.

HYSSOP- Strengthens the immune system, nourishes blood  and possesses potent anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-bacteria.  Hyssop has traditionally been used as a remedy against colds, flus, bronchial congestion, coughs, asthma, sinus congestion, pulmonary distress and sore throats.
• 4 envelopes (1 ounce) unflavored gelatin (That’s 3 Tbs. plus 1 tsp. of bulk gelatin) Knox Gelatin is readily available at most grocery stores. Great Lakes Gelatin is certified Kosher. You could also substitute agar agar.
• 1 cup cold fruit juice
• 3 cups fruit juice, heated with herbs* OR 2 cups hot fruit juice plus one cup tea*
• 2 tablespoons honey, optional
Prepare hot ingredients – If using juice with herbs, place juice and herbs in medium pot and simmer for 10 minutes. If using tea, brew tea and let steep for 10 minutes, covered, then mix with juice in pot and heat to boiling.

Other Flavor Combinations:

Apple/Cinnamon/Ginger – 1-cup cold apple cider, 3 cups hot apple cider simmered with 2 cinnamon sticks and 1/2 tsp. dried ginger root or 1 tsp. fresh ginger

Apple-Carrot/Echinacea – 1-cup cold apple cider, 2 cups carrot juice, 1 cup Echinacea tea

Apple-Carrot/Ginger – 1-cup cold apple cider, 2 cups carrot juice plus 1 cup apple cider, simmered with 1 tsp. freshly grated ginger

Apple/Mint – 3 cups hot apple cider, 1 cup cold peppermint tea

Pomegranate/Lemon Balm – 1-cup cold pomegranate juice, 2 cups hot pomegranate juice, 1 cup lemon balm tea

Orange/Ginger – 1-cup cold orange (or carrot) juice, 3 cups hot orange juice simmered with 1/2 tsp dried ginger root or 1-tsp fresh ginger
